Youngstown Community Boating
History
Youngstown Community Boating operates on the scenic lower Niagara River on the property of Youngstown Yacht Club. Of all the activities held at YYC, one of the most successful is unquestionably the Junior and Adult Sailing Programs. What began as a private club operation in the 1950’s has eventually evolved into diverse boating education programs that are open to the community.
The development of the program began in 1955, by which time YYC had become a “big boat” Club. Thirteen members, with 43 children among them, joined together to purchase a fleet of dinghies. By the early 1960s, these dinghies were made available for a Club-sponsored program with instructors. By the 1970s, the program grew from volunteer instructors to a paid staff, and to a top-notch operation. In 2009, the Youngstown Sailing Foundation was formed which is now a 501c(3) non- profit organization. This Foundation currently operates under the name “Youngstown Community Boating” and has recently expanded its offerings to include Kayak and Paddleboard rentals as well as expanded Adult and Junior Sailing offerings. The Youngstown Yacht Club is proud of its heritage, and continues to support Youngstown Community Boating, traditions of the sport of sailing, and all other boating activities that YCB offers.
